Old Gus Eats
Release: July 2012Download a PDF (great for iPads)
This chapbook contains stanzas fourteen through twenty-three of the The Odyssey by Homer, mistranslated visually from the ancient Greek. Polly Duff Bresnick's process involves looking at the foreign shapes and symbols of the Greek in search of familiar, English words. This has been termed eye-rhyming, bad lip reading, or Rorschach writing. Here, the Greek and English are placed side-by-side so that the reader can judge the visual translations.

Via "Read This Awesome Book": POST NATIVITY is a long poem in 3 parts--at moments it prays, other moments it's drunk and falling over, other moments it's being degraded, other moments it's looking around at the terrifying landscape of our inhabitable (UN-inhabitable?) spaces.
Joe Hall was born in the woods and is devoted to Cheryl. Black Ocean Press published his first book of poems, Pigafetta Is My Wife, in 2010. With Chad Hardy he wrote The Container Store Vol. I (SpringGun 2012). His poems, fiction, book reviews, and essays have appeared in Gulf Coast, Octopus, HTMLGiant, The Colorado Review, Versal and elsewhere.
SAMPLE TEXT:
Make me your pen, your two turntables and a microphone
Your air raid siren, your silence, the IED
Detonated, my brain slammed against my skull, Beast
Make me your staff, your sword, your brick, your bottle, your rod
You stacked me in a pile of other bodies, you took pictures
Lauren Bender
This book was originally published as the second chapbook from PGP. It was digitally printed inside, with a potato-print cover. The text was composed for the IE Reading series in 2007, where Lauren Bender performed the reading from inside of a cardboard box. It is reproduced here, with more information and reviews at Publishing Genius's main site. Lauren Bender lives in Baltimore, where she is part of the Narrow House Publishing Concern.

Tips on Printing
The print versions of Chapbook Genius series are formatted to be double-sided. This is a snap to do; your printer can do it automatically. After you select File Print, look for "Preferences" or "Properties" or "Advanced" and select the option that makes you happiest. Use your best judgment. On most HP printers, the function is labeled "2-Sided (Duplex) Printing."
Presto bingo.
When you choose this option, your printer will output the odd sides and then ask you to reinsert the same pages to print the other sides. Follow its lead, and once you've printed with satisfaction, align the pages, fold them, and staple. If you've only got a regular stapler, you're going to have to gently fold the back half of the book so that the stapler arm can reach the fold. Be careful!
Master this technique; there are lots of eJournals that offer PDF books that are formatted the same way. Like this George Saunders stuff. And hey, now that you're getting really good at it, why not try using some nice, 100lb cardstock for the cover? Or, sometimes you might want to just stick a blank sheet of paper between the first and second page before you fold and staple. Sometimes I do that with great pleasure.
